Purpose and scope
Create a dependable restroom reset sequence that makes the next user’s condition, supply status, and unresolved concerns visible.
Entries, fixtures, dispensers, partitions, touchpoints, waste points, floors, and the immediate exit area. Follow district policy, product labels, SDS, and applicable local requirements.
Supplies and readiness
- Assigned keys or access method
- Approved products and tools for the assigned zone
- Clean, zone-appropriate cloths or pads
- Waste liners and a route log or district-approved digital record
- Assigned PPE and temporary safety signage when conditions call for it
Procedure
Step group 1
Prepare the route
- 1Confirm occupancy and announce entry according to site practice.
- 2Position temporary safety signage before wet work or when the floor condition needs attention.
- 3Scan for standing water, broken fixtures, unknown residue, vandalism, or an access issue before beginning routine work.
- 4Stage only the supplies needed for this room so the exit and fixtures remain accessible.
Step group 2
Reset the room in a stable order
Work from the entry through the room using the same sequence on each round.
- 1Remove waste and replace liners without overfilling the collection point.
- 2Replenish tissue, hand-drying, soap, and menstrual-product supplies where provided; note empty reserve stock rather than improvising substitutions.
- 3Address fixtures, partitions, dispensers, and touchpoints with zone-appropriate materials and the facility-approved product process.
- 4Complete the floor pass last, keeping equipment and materials controlled so the exit remains clear.
Step group 3
Release and hand off
- 1Check that fixtures are presentable, dispensers operate as expected, and the room has the supplies intended for the next use period.
- 2Remove signage only when the floor condition is safe and no work remains in the travel path.
- 3Record completed work and flag any item that needs repair, resupply, or supervisor review.
Quality checks
- No visible waste remains at collection points or on the floor.
- Consumables are available at installed dispensers or the supply gap is documented.
- The floor, entry, and exit path are clear and safe for normal use.
- Leaks, damage, blocked fixtures, or recurring odor concerns are not left as informal verbal notes.
Supervisor check
- •Spot-check one room at the beginning and end of a route to compare condition and record quality.
- •Look for route consistency: waste, supplies, surfaces, floor, then handoff—not a rushed surface-only pass.
Document this
- •Room or route identifier, completed time, supply gaps, fixture issues, and any room taken out of routine service.
- •Repeated conditions such as a persistent odor, unusually high waste volume, or recurring dispenser failure.
Escalate when
- •There is standing water, a blocked fixture, a leak, electrical concern, damage that creates a hazard, or an unknown substance.
- •A condition requires maintenance, security, health services, administration, or a response outside the assigned custodial procedure.
Coaching notes
- •Teach the route in the actual space, then have the employee narrate the reason for each decision.
- •Use specific observations and one next action rather than a general reminder to be more careful.
