Format
Read-only reference · 3 min read
Purpose and scope
Establish the day’s starting condition across entrances, common routes, restrooms, and priority-use spaces.
Exterior approach as assigned, entryways, main corridors, restrooms, main office approach, cafeteria approach, and identified event or weather-sensitive zones.
Supplies and readiness
- Assigned keys or access method
- Approved products and tools for the assigned zone
- Clean, zone-appropriate cloths or pads
- Waste liners and a route log or district-approved digital record
- Assigned PPE and temporary safety signage when conditions call for it
Procedure
Step group 1
Make the first pass
- 1Walk the published route before beginning non-urgent detail work.
- 2Look for access barriers, weather-related tracking, water, trip hazards, vandalism, waste overflow, and urgent supply gaps.
- 3Check that the route’s most public-facing spaces are ready for the first users without treating the walkthrough as a full inspection.
Step group 2
Triage what you found
- 1Address immediate conditions within your assignment or secure the area while help is arranged.
- 2Separate conditions into now, same shift, and planned follow-up so lower-priority work does not erase urgent work from view.
- 3Tell the supervisor or designated contact about any issue affecting entry, restroom use, event readiness, or safe travel.
Step group 3
Set the day’s route
- 1Update the route log with the opening status and the highest-priority follow-up.
- 2Confirm who owns unresolved items when coverage changes during the day.
- 3Return to the standard route once the opening condition is stable.
Quality checks
- Priority entrances and circulation paths are accessible for normal use.
- Known concerns have an owner or a documented next review time.
- The opening record distinguishes completed work from an observation needing another response.
Supervisor check
- •Observe the sequence in the field before changing the route or expectation.
- •Review one completed record for enough detail to support a handoff.
Document this
- •Opening time, priority areas checked, condition found, temporary controls used, and person notified.
- •Weather-related impacts, repeated overnight issues, and any change to normal route priorities.
Escalate when
- •A condition presents an immediate safety concern or the area cannot be used as intended.
- •The work requires maintenance, a trained response, or direction outside the assigned task.
Coaching notes
- •Teach the route in the actual space, then have the employee narrate the reason for each decision.
- •Use specific observations and one next action rather than a general reminder to be more careful.
